The Weight of Things in the Presence of Light

Project Proposal: A Permanent Outdoor Public Sculpture

The Weight of Things in the Presence of Light is a stringed instrument that is tuned by the rising and falling tides of the Hudson River. Unlike traditional instruments whose tuning remain static throughout the duration of a performance, this instrument will constantly change.

The project draws its title from the observation that people, objects, ideas and memories tend to carry different psychological and emotional weight as our relationship to them evolves. What happens if the vocabulary we use to describe that experience was also in flux?

The video shows a testing module I constructed in order to determine how much weight is required to achieve the largest range of tension without either the string breaking or going slack. This all depends greatly on the material, gauge and length of the string. Translating roughly three feet of tidal movement (from high tide to low tide) into less than an inch of string lengthening/shortening is achieved through a series of pulleys known as a Block and Tackle system. Once this information is gathered, I can begin experimenting with a larger model that has 24 strings.

Subject to the river's ebb and flow, the instrument acts in two ways: as an invitation to meditate on the cycles of experience, and as a catalyst for a new kind of music making that reflects the nature of that experience.

The Many Oneness

Work in Progress:
Interactive Visual/Sound Installation

Project Notes:
If music is traditionally defined as “the ordering of sound to produce an experience of unity or continuity,” this project “The Many Oneness” intends to investigate the underlying nature of that unified experience. What makes up what we hear as one note or one sound? What makes up what we think of as one moment, one word, one self?

The Many Oneness uses a single string and a handful of microphones to isolate and amplify the different sounds, known as overtones, that come together to make the one note we are normally capable of hearing from a particular string. When plucked, a string immediately begins to find its way back to its center, to a state of equilibrium. In the process of finding that balance, the string emits sound. Under the right conditions, a string will emit, for example, what we call a C note. The Many Oneness inverts the experience by honing in on the different sounds that occur at different points along the string's length. As different as these sounds are, they come together to make up what we hear as C.

The Many Oneness is a sculptural instrument that has the opposite aim of most instruments. Rather than bring notes together, it aims to break them apart, to separate out the sounds that make the whole. What can we learn from listening to the pieces instead of gleaning what we can of the whole? What can we learn about the proposition of fixed languages or the nature of oneness?

We tend to think "one string, one sound.” The Many Oneness proposes one string, many sounds. We have one self. Yet, by isolating the sounds within a single vibrating string, we get a new perspective— oneness is born of multitudes.

At this point in the project’s development, I am experimenting with different materials, string thicknesses, lengths and tensions to figure out which combination produces the richest range of harmonic overtones. I would like for the viewer to walk into the room and be able to turn on and off any one of the multiple mics, allowing for the various tones to be heard alone or in harmony with one another. An alternate arrangement is the construction of one glass sphere that moves along the length of the string. As the string vibrates, a single mic would amplify the changing sounds.
